Bret 'The Hitman' Hart is set to make his long-awaited return to the WWE ring as the guest host of Raw. Find out why he left, why he's returning and where it could lead.

For almost a decade Bret 'The Hitman' Hart was one of the biggest names in the wrestling industry, due not only to his incredible ability and family notoriety, but also because of the infamous 'Montreal Screwjob', which led many fans to doubt he would ever make a comeback with the WWE.

Why Did Bret Hart Leave the WWE?

Bret Hart had been a big name in the WWE since joining forces with his brother Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart and manager Jimmy Hart to create The Hart Foundation.

After claiming the tag titles twice Bret moved into the singles division where he became a two-time Intercontinental and five-time World Heavyweight Champion.

Despite being one of the biggest names in his promotion, WWE Owner Vince McMahon supposedly encouraged Hart to speak with rivals WCW and ultimately join them, as he had financial issues which ending Hart's 15-plus year contract would help alleviate.

Hart's final match in the WWE was against real-life rival Shawn Michaels in his home country of Canada.

Because of the location Hart requested that he be able to retain his title, then relinquish it and leave for WCW, which McMahon initially agreed to.

However, as the match came around McMahon had a change of heart.

Along with official Earl Hebner and Shawn Michaels, McMahon orchestrated what became known as The Montreal Screwjob, humiliating Hart and effectively stripping him of the World Heavyweight Championship in his home country.

Understandably annoyed, Hart spat at McMahon and allegedly punched him off-camera, vowing never to do business with the WWE again.

Why is Bret Hart Coming Back to the WWE?

While wrestling fans these days may be more familiar with the likes of John Cena, Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton, two names that will always resonate with followers of the squared circle are Hulk Hogan and Bret 'The Hitman' Hart.

When rival brand TNA (Total Nonstop Action) announced that not only would they be going head to head with the WWE's flagship show; Raw, but that they also had Hulk Hogan on board, Vince McMahon had to respond in a big way.

And respond he did, with an announcement that Bret Hart would guest host Raw, appearing on a WWE broadcast for the first time in 12 years!

Bret Hart's Future with WWE

Vince McMahon is renowned for his shrewd business sense, and no doubt realised that while a one-off appearance might draw in an initial crowd, something more long term might be required to gain a stranglehold over TNA in the new Monday Night Wars.

Rumour has it that Hart has signed a contract taking him just beyond WrestleMania XXVI in April, with many fans predicting a McMahon/Hart match at the years biggest event, perhaps even involving Shawn Michaels.

Regardless of the eventual outcome, the rising challenge from TNA can only be a positive boost for the wrestling industry as a whole, illustrated perfectly by the unexpected but most welcome return of the Excellence of Execution.

As a fan of wwe and Bret I am glad to see him back. However,
even with billions, Vince MacMahoan has to feed his ego like a bag man on the street by kicking Bret at the End of Monday nights Raw show. No class and if that was written in their script it only dampened the fans spirits after enjoying the whole show.
Vince should stay off the television, so fans can enjoy the show period.

it was great to see bret back in wwe after more than a decade. and i hope they(the scriptwriters) dont mess up everything . even though his age and fitness may not allow him to perform like he used to , i still believe he can put up a great show coz he is the best. by the way what's wrong with his theme song ? the one during the attitude era rocked.

Get the Bret Hart back to ring as he is awsome and still very popular. If not regular, schedule some matches on monthly basis. This way he will be able to cope with his fitness and please his fans. More people will watch television if The Hitman returns. Please do it...

Has this new Bret Hart angle upset any other (former?) Hitman fans?

WWE basically mocks him at the opening sequence of any WWE television event or am I the only one who noticed that as soon as Bret returned they added Million Dollar Man's catchphrase (Everybody has a price) followed by a video clip of the Hitman. Then when Bret returns he apologizes to everyone who screwed him and when confronted by McMahon over the weeks, Hitman just stands there with a blank look (and no response or defense), all while hiding behind his sunglasses so McMahon can assault him and worse of all insult him and his legendary family.

I understand setting Bret up as an underdog to get fan heat going to the biggest show of the year, but it has not been endearing (just makes me sad Bret sold out), so hopefully Bret does something big at Wrestlemania to redeem himself because so far he has looked like a total pansy and done nothing but further tarnish a hall of fame career.

I agree that his return has been somewhat lacklustre up to this point, but I expect they are using a 'slow burn' to build upto Mania, portraying him as the underdog as you say.

There isn't an awful lot Bret can do since his stroke, so keeping him to the occasional appearance might be all they can muster at the minute.

As for the WWE Ident intro, I think you might be reading into it a little too much there. They introduced DiBiase's line and image to the reel to replace Hogan's 'Hulkamania is Runnin' wild, Brother' since he jumped to TNA (they also cut his name out of the very start and replaced it with Freddie Blassie's)

Maybe it was done deliberately, but I doubt it.
