Jericho and Edge were once a formidable tag team, claiming the Unified Tag titles on their first night as a duo (The Bash 2009) and holding them until Edge ruptured his Achilles tendon in July.
This injury would be the end of their partnership, and served as the catalyst for their match at WrestleMania.
How Edge and Jericho Became a Team
After failing to win the World Heavyweight Championship Edge burst into Teddy Long’s office at The Bash and demanded he be placed in the C.M Punk Vs. Jeff Hardy title match later that night.
Long rejected his request, then rejected a similar one from Chris Jericho moments later, after he lost his Intercontinental Championship to Rey Mysterio and demanded a re-match at the same event.
Teddy didn’t seem inclined to do anything about either man’s situation until Vince McMahon paid him a visit and reminded him that if he didn’t make an impact soon he could be out of a job.
Later that night as the Unified Tag Team Championships match between Priceless (Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes) and Carlito & Primo was just about to start Long introduced a third team into the mix; Edge and Jericho.
Despite only being involved in the match for mere minutes Edge picked up the win for his team with a Spear on Carlito after Jericho had taken Primo out of the action with a CodeBreaker.
Edge and Jericho Split
Despite displaying strong teamwork Jericho and Edge’s partnership was short-lived, as Edge picked up a serious injury less than a month down the line and had to forfeit his half of the gold.
In a rather unprecedented move by the powers that be, Jericho was allowed to keep his half of the titles and even choose a replacement partner, which he revealed to be The Big Show at Night of Champions.
Edge’s Shocking Royal Rumble Return
As Jeri-Show kept winning Chris would occasionally throw the odd insult towards his former partner, claiming The Rated R Superstar was a weak link in their team, even going so far as to interrupt Edge’s first appearance back on WWE programming.
Despite fears that Edge would never wrestle again he recovered quickly and shocked the world by making a victorious come-back during the Royal Rumble match, months before doctors had even considered he would be ready to return.
In the weeks following the Rumble Edge carefully considered which World Title he would go after, only making a decision after the Elimination Chamber Pay Per View when Chris Jericho took the World Heavyweight Championship from The Undertaker after a huge assist from Shawn Michaels.
Who Will win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVI?
Since the match was made Edge has made it his business to Spear Jericho at any given opportunity, telling the Champion he plans to do the same at WrestleMania to take the gold.
However, Jericho has been quick to point out that every time the two of them end up in the same ring ‘bad things happen’ to the Rated R Superstar, a fact which Edge cannot deny.
Whatever happens at WrestleMania XXVI fans can rest assured that this will be a match fitting of the grand occasion it is set to take place at.
The original premise of this match was that Edge had returned looking for revenge over his former partner, who had branded him a weak and pathetic Superstar in his absence.
When this was the case he looked like a certainty for a win at Mania, but since then Edge has had the upper hand more often than not, hitting Spear after Spear on Jericho, already gaining a level of revenge.
This leaves the outcome of the match at WrestleMania wide open and although a title loss for Jericho would seem harsh just over a month after he won it, it wouldn’t be the first time the Creative Team used him as a transitional champion.
Prediction: Jericho to keep hold of the gold by cheating, leading to a continuation of the feud.
